Purple at a Dog Show

Purple was given to me (Heather-Jean) when I first moved out of the house.  I moved with only one dog and it didn't go very well.  Tail was depressed and lonely, so rather than give her back I got another.  (Okay so the potato chip theory works even on me.)   From day one Purple was different, she was never really a puppy, she had class and dignity, she never chewed things, she never messed the house, she was just a perfect little angel.

Purple's show career was probably the best I could hope for.  She was a dilute with a really dark nose and almost black eyes and judges didn't seem to notice that she wasn't flashy brindle and white.

Purple got her American Championship quickly with 3 x 4 point majors and then a 5 point major.

She won the Whippet Club of Eastern Canada's specialty when she was about 4 years old, with an entry of over 60 dogs. It really was quite an experience for me showing her that day.  Normally I don't go in the ring because I hate dog shows, but for some reason I decided to go.  It was one of the best days ever.  Purple was doing her best to be bad, she was barking at squirrels in the trees, she jumped over the table on the go around (while the judge was looking) she stole liver from all the people around her and was generally having the time of her life.  When the judge pointed at me for Best of Breed I thought he was pointing at someone beside me and didn't do a thing.  The Judge actually had to walk up to me to tell me I won.

Purple's coursing career wasn't outstanding but she had a lot of fun.  The main thing that sticks out in my mind was the day she was disqualified.  Ontario Lure Coursing has had a long tradition of holding a Halloween Costume contest, Purple had entered the contest as a Grape.  I had taken Purple Mousse and made her purple all over, put a green collar on her and voila a Grape.  She didn't win the contest and because it was so late when we finally got home, I didn't bother to give her a bath.  The next day she ran as a "Purple Whippet".  Well the scores came in from the field and since I'm Field Trial Secretary, I just check the scores and wrote everything down.  When I had finished I went back to look at the name of the dog that had been dismissed - Well it was Purple.  I looked up in total shock and there were the Judges, Field Clerk and Huntmaster all staring at me laughing.  They had done two sets of judges sheets; the first set stated that Purple was DQ'd because she was obviously on steroids and had changed colour overnight.  The second set, that they finally gave me showed the correct scores.  Purple took the breed that day and finished her Field Championship.
